Plastic Waste Management System in the Kampungs of Semporna

In Kampung Air, Semporna, Malaysia, plastic waste threatens land and water. Political issues like statelessness and eviction left the village without proper waste management, risking health, the environment, and daily quality of life.Challenging this entrenched neglect required community-wide initiative. We worked with local organizations Borneo Komrad (BK) and Amwil to seek sustainable waste solutions—installing a bridge net barrier, fostering ongoing dialogue with villagers, and envisioning broader projects across educating youths and engineering trash collection methods.The two-year effort now lives in a Minecraft simulation, virtually re-creating the local geography, architecture, and community environmental efforts. This world honors the kampung, preserving its beautiful way of living and empowering locals with novel mediums to express and share their story.Virtual 3D Simulation of Kampung Air, Semporna using Minecraft (click here to find out more)"Their two years of hard work breathes in this 3D virtual world." We re-created the environment of Kampung Air into this simulation that showcases the village geography and local project initiatives. Having the famous video game platform Minecraft as its medium, the virtual world focuses on empowering the villagers as agents of designing and rebuilding their environment, unbounded by political restraints or physical limitations, and inviting anyone around the world to experience their beautiful home culture in a first-person view as a player of the game. We created this world in honor of the kampung – for the villagers' future usage in building a meaningful virtual space to conserve their heritage and have a channel to tell their story in their own voice. As you immerse yourself in Kampung Air as a player, walk around and observe the large buildings as well as small details that make the kampung alive. We designed an application for caregivers of people with intellectual disabilities (ID) to allow them to form a community and sign up for events organised by MINDS easily. We identified them as an overlooked group that we wanted to help by shining a light on their struggles. We worked together with MINDS to get to know out target audience better, and they were extremely supportive of our project! The Process of Caring (click here to watch)This documentary showcases the development of our app designed for caregivers of special needs children. By sharing insights from our research and interviews with MINDS, we hope this documentary can serve as a good start to shine light on the struggles caregivers go through and how we can support them.Companion Care (The Care Collective)

From AI to Theatre: How can architects and planners win over the community with Participatory Design

Our goal is to help architects and planners secure community buy-in by explaining design choices clearly and adapting them to feedback. We first ask how practitioners can engage residents more accessibly: our participatory design toolkit offers a menu of adaptable workshops for varied contexts, helping teams choose formats that fit their needs. We also ask how architects can better communicate visions to non-experts: our embodiment workshop, inspired by theatre, translates architectural ideas into movement, empathy, and lived experience. Unlike initiatives focused only on structured input, our approach engages residents and architects together to turn ideas into actionable solutions that move projects forward. We engaged with residents at Dawson estate in Queenstown and partners including Participate in Design, Queenstown Kakis, and NUS Cities faculty. Our project addresses the data management challenges faced by social enterprises and charities like The Access Challenge (TAC). Through extensive research and collaboration with TAC, we identified that these organizations struggle with limited resources and technical expertise despite recognizing data's importance.We created a comprehensive Medium post series that guides organizations through the complete data lifecycle using Google Suite tools, focusing on free, low-code solutions that integrate with existing systems. Our guide covers data collection, storage, processing, visualization, and lifecycle management, making technical concepts accessible through real-world examples and step-by-step instructions.By transforming complex data management concepts into practical, implementable solutions, our project empowers social enterprises to make better decisions, save resources, and increase their impact—all without requiring significant technical expertise or financial investment.Insight Horror (click here to watch Part 1, click here to watch Part 2)We created a playful, horror-styled mini film to discuss common data problems: persistent errors that keep returning, duplicate entries, and unsynced responses from different sources.
