Law and Community Formation

The law has the power to create, enhance, or protect communities of people.  Migrant workers have certain protections and rights based on the pass they hold.  The disabled rely on the recognition of their impairment for the state to ensure equal access and fair treatment.   The law can also create separate categories out of existing groups: from being elderly to being part of the “pioneer generation.” This theme allows us to explore the logic, processes, and consequences of forming “communities” through law.  We can work on exploring multicultural, gender, sexual, religious, or professional communities shaped by the law.
