There are over 100,000 Rohingya refugees in Malaysia who fled genocide and other human right abuses in Myanmar. As Malaysia lacks a legal framework for refugees, they do not have legal status or work rights, leaving them vulnerable to arbitrary arrests and exploitation. The lack of legal status also limits their access to healthcare, education, and employment.
IEx Malaysia x Rohingya Refugees will provide students with opportunities to engage with Rohingya communities in the Klang Valley (wider Kuala Lumpur) to identify community resources that can be mobilised to enhance the lived experiences of the Rohingya. We will collaborate not only with Rohingya communities but also with relevant partner organisations, such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), to assess needs, leverage existing resources, and explore innovative ways to strengthen the capabilities of the Rohingya. Our objective is to involve students with a broad spectrum of interests and interdisciplinary skill sets, with the goal of improving the Rohingya's access to healthcare, education, livelihoods, and protection assistance.
